The Indian Postal Department has released the notification for GDS Recruitment 2024 through Notification No. 17-03/2024-GDS on 12th July 2024. Through this notification, the Indian Postal Department has invited interested and eligible candidates to fill the 44,228 vacant posts of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS). The vacancies will be filled for the post of Branch Post Master (BPM), Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM), and Dak Sevaks.

Salary:
The Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) are paid emoluments in the form of Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA). The initial basic TRCA slabs for the post of:
- Branch Post Master (BMP) → Rs. 12,000 – Rs. 29,380/-
- Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM)/ Dak Sevak → Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 24,470/-
There will be other benefits like Dearness Allowances on TRCA, GDS Gratuity and Service Discharge Benefit Scheme. There will be also an annual increment of 3% as per GDS rules,

Job Profile and Responsibilities
Job Profile of Branch Post Master (BPM):
- The BPM is responsible for managing the day-to-day postal operations of the Branch Post Office (B.O) and India Post Payment Bank (IPPB) as prescribed by the Department.
- Handling marketing and promotion of products and services provided by the department and handling various services in the Customer Services Centers (CSCs).
- In single-handed Branch Offices, the BPM has to take the overall responsibility of handling and delivering mail and smooth functioning of the Office.
- BPM also has to assist the Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM) whenever required and in case of non-availability of ABPM, the BRM has to handle tasks as assigned by the superior.
Job Profile for Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM):
- Assisting Branch Post Master (BPM) in various postal operations as prescribed by the department.
- Selling postal stamps/stationeries, delivering mail at doorsteps, exchanging mail with account office (like deposit/payment/other transactions of IPPB).
- Marketing and promotion of products and services provided by the department and handling various services in the Customer Services Centers (CSCs).
- In case of non-availability of the BPM, the ABPM has to take on the responsibilities of the BPM and any other work assigned by the superiors.
Job Profile of Dak Sevak:
- Selling postal stamps/stationeries, delivering mail at doorsteps, deposit/payment/other transactions of IPPB and any other responsibilities assigned by the Postmaster/Sub Postmaster.
- May have to work in sorting offices of the Railway Mail Service (RMS).
- Have to handle receipt/dispatch of mailbags, transhipment of bags etc.
- Assisting Post Master / Sub Postmaster in managing the smooth functioning of the Departmental Post Office and doing marketing whenever required.
Resident / Accommodation:
- Branch Post Master (BPM): The candidate selected as Branch Post Master (BPM) will have to provide accommodation for the Branch Post Office after selection but before engagement. A declaration is to be submitted before engagement.
- Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM): The candidates selected as Assistant Branch Post Master have to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Branch Post Office (BO).
- Dak Sevak: The candidate selected as Dak Sevak has to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Post Office (HO/SO).

GDS Recruitment 2024 Selection Process
- The selection process for GDS Recruitment 2024 is purely based on the merit list. The merit list of the shortlisted candidates will be prepared based on the marks obtained/conversion of Grades/Points to marks in the Secondary School Examination (10th standard) which will be aggregated to percentage to the accuracy of 4 decimals.
- Physical Document Verification: The shortlisted candidates will be called for physical verification of documents.

Is GDS a fully government job?
The Gramin Dak Sevaks are not regular employees of the Department of Post and the salaries and allowances are not at par with the Central Government employees. The service conditions of GDS are governed by the Department of Post, Gramin Dak Sevaks (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020 [referred to as GDS Rules], as revised from time to time and not framed under Article 309 of the Constitution of India. The GDS is the holder of Civil Posts outside the civil services of the state.
How is GDS merit calculated?
The merit of the GDS Recruitment 2024 will be calculated purely based on marks obtained / conversion of grades/ Points to marks by the candidate in the Secondary Examination (i.e. class 10) from any recognised board aggregated to percentage to the accuracy of 4 decimals.
Does GDS get PF?
The Gramin Dak Sevak is not entitled to get any benefits of the Provident Fund (PF) but the GDS will attract other allowances and social security benefits like the GDS Gratuity, and Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (akin to the Pension Scheme applicable to regular employees).
